Nordstrom putting the holidays on hold until Black Friday

Nordstrom is standing its ground on the issue of whether or not to open on Thanksgiving Day, right down to store decorations. While the chain will debut some Black Friday discounts online a day early, brick-and-mortar stores will remain closed until regular hours and open to unveil their holiday decorations for the first time on Friday, Nov. 27.

Don't expect holiday fare at Nordstrom until Black Friday

Nordstrom, for another year, is putting its employees ahead of its sales-slinging this Thanksgiving. The department store has issued a disclaimer: It will remain closed on the Thursday holiday, opening at normal hours on Black Friday, “unveiling” its holiday decorations that day. Before that, Nordstrom won’t even acknowledge that Christmas is coming.

Toys R Us announces Thanksgiving Day opening

Toys R Us stores nationwide will open at 5pm on Thanksgiving Day and stay open until 11pm on Friday, the company announced in a statement. Other retailers that have announced Thanksgiving Day openings include Macys Inc. M, -0.34% and Sears Holdings Corp. SHLD, +0.08% which open at 6pm. REI will not only remain closed on Thanksgiving Day, but will also be closed on Black Friday, and is encouraging others to “go outside and play instead” through a hashtag, #OptOutside. Research conducted by RichRelevance found that 64.5% of respondents “hate” or “dislike” the practice of stores opening on Thanksgiving. RichRelevance, which works with retailers on customer personalization programs, surveyed 1,000 Americans for its findings.
